The New York Stock Exchange’s likely sale to Frankfurt Stock Exchange is a sad event for the country, which is losing an icon of global finance to the Germans — including possibly the NYSE name, once one of the best-known brands in corporate America.
But the merger (slated to be announced on Tuesday, I’m told) is even sadder for New Yorkers. What little is left of our economic dominance as the “Empire State” has now been shattered by a deadly combination of global competition that is ruthless in picking winners and losers and the high taxes and vast spending of the New York nanny state.
Despite these burdens, the financial sector — the big banks and investment houses and the NYSE — managed to survive, providing plentiful jobs for blue-collar and back-office workers, as well as highly paid bankers and traders. But recent regulations, including those in the name of “financial reform,” have imposed so many fees and costs on investment houses that operating in the New York area, with its high taxes on business and individuals, has become increasingly difficult even for the biggest big banks that still call New York their home.

Dem States Top List Seeking Another Kind of Federal Bailout – WSJ.com
Republicans on Capitol Hill responded with hostility Tuesday to a White House proposal to allow cash-strapped states to raise unemployment-insurance taxes. But in some states struggling with rising debt and empty coffers, officials said the plan should be considered.
Administration officials say the proposal, to be included in President Barack Obama’s budget plan for the next fiscal year, is intended to help states that so far have borrowed $42.4 billion from the federal government to keep benefits flowing after exhausting the reserves used to pay unemployment benefits.
Some of those 31 states have borrowed so heavily, and repaid the loans so slowly, that they triggered automatic tax increases designed to reimburse the federal government.

Even teen hookers need abortions. It’s not exactly bumper sticker material, but so far that’s the best the Left has to offerin defense of Planned Parenthood. After a clinic worker was caught on tape helping a child prostitution ring “look as legit as possible,” the nation’s biggest abortion factory has become almost hysterical with panic. In the days since Lila Rose’s explosive new video, Planned Parenthood has elevated its threat level and enlisted as many allies as possible to vouch for the organization (which has now been implicated in 12 Live Action videos). On a strategy call organized by billionaire liberal George Soros, Planned Parenthood asked its allies to try and deflect some of the negative attention away from the abortion industry by ramping up their attacks of Lila Rose. Now that Planned Parenthood is vulnerable, liberals are circling the wagons, understanding that any more slip-ups could mean the end of their federal gravy train. This week, 27 liberal groups came out swinging in the press–led by Soros’s Media Matters, which quickly organized a letter of support for Planned Parenthood’s new outreach to pimps. “Right-wing groups are once again attempting to destroy an organization dedicated to providing crucial primary care services to Americans that need them most…”
By “crucial primary care services,” I assume they mean instructing 14-year-old prostitutes which sex acts they can perform after abortions? That was perhaps the most damaging part of the entire video. Planned Parenthood claims to be a woman’s biggest advocate, yet in the same breath it pushes young girls back onto the street after surgery to sell their bodies to strangers. Is this the “compassion” that liberals are always talking about? If these clinics won’t protect a teenage sex slave, what leads anyone to believe that they would protect women of any kind? Maybe Planned Parenthood would argue that prostitution–like abortion–is about “choice.” But no little girl makes a conscious decision to become a sex worker. There’s a reason that we don’t allow 14-year-olds to drive or vote: we don’t trust their judgment. By the same token, we should never assume that these girls are anything but a product of manipulation and exploitation. That’s why most state laws order clinics like this one to report abuse. The fact that Planned Parenthood would not only leave these teenagers trapped in prostitution–but encourage it–shows an incredible lack of humanity.
