Oregon newspaper: we endorsed Obama, we were wrong

The president has tied his re-election to those who value current entitlements more than the country’s future economic survival. Entitlements and interest on the national debt now represent about 70 percent of the annual federal budget.

Mitt Romney and running mate Paul Ryan represent an opportunity to reverse that alarmingly shortsighted outlook. In 2012, as we said in 2008, “America must unite behind someone who can elicit a national willingness to sacrifice for common goals related to energy, the economy, health care and international diplomacy.”

Romney and Obama are intelligent, compassionate, charismatic standard-bearers for their parties. Each espouses policies we embrace, and each promotes strategies that Americans should resist. On balance, however, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan are best suited to lead the country toward fiscal conservatism and economic recovery.
